The Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA) in collaboration with the University of Fort (UFH) Accounting Department will host the annual Professor Wiseman Nkuhlu Lecture.
In its fifth year running, the lecture is in honour of the trail that Professor Nkuhlu has blazed in the accountancy profession as the first black African CA (SA). The event is also in recognition of his significant contribution to the development of black Accountants.
Since its inaugural lecture in 2018 which was delivered by Prof Nkuhlu, this event has hosted past presidents of ABASA, Tsakani Maluleke, Sizwe Nxasana and Dr Futhi Mtoba as lecturers.
This year’s lecture will be delivered by the Chief Executive Officer of SNG-Grant Thornton, Mr Victor Sekese, under the national theme: “Driving Leadership Excellence through Inclusive Social Accountability”. Mr Sekese has extensive audit and consulting experience which spans over 28 years. His experience includes the private and public sectors and state-owned companies.
This will be the first time that the lecture will hosted in the Eastern Cape which is home to Prof Nkuhlu. It also a great pleasure for the University Fort Hare, Prof Nkuhlu’s alma mater, to be the hosting venue for this significant event.
Here at UFH, Prof Nkuhlu’s legacy lives through the UFH Accounting Department which is named after him.

It is therefore important that our focus turns to historically disadvantaged universities such as UFH,’ says National President of ABASA, Ms Linda Maqoma.
‘In hosting the ABASA Annual Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu Lecture at UFH it is our hope that it will inspire accounting students currently furthering their studies at the Nkuhlu Department of Accounting. May this lecture also remind us of exceptional leaders, such as Prof Nkuhlu, who have walked the corridors of this great institution and our responsibility to ensure that it continues to produce professional and leadership excellence that our country needs.’ says Maqoma.
The event will be held at the ABC Hall on the UFH East London campus at 2pm, and will be followed by the Eastern Cape ABASA Professional Excellence Dinner at the East London ICC.
