Mbalula cracks the whip, but has he gone to the extreme?

When the garrulous Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, had been threatening that he would take drastic action against various sporting codes that did not meet transformation targets, people did not take him seriously, dismissing his pronouncements as a bark without a bite.

But now when least expected, Mbalula has made an earth-shattering announcement, which has rugby, cricket and netball administrators quaking in their shoes. They have been barred from hosting competitions unless they demonstrate a commitment to transforming their structures, in South African sporting parlance, introducing initiatives that ensure that black South Africans participate from structures from the grassroots.

Following the announcement, some commentators have torn Mbalula’s decision to pieces. What’s your opinion? Do you think Mbalula has gone to the extreme? Isn’t there a better way to enforce transformation?
