Unathi Mtya is African Bank’s new Group Chief Information Officer. She is no stranger to the field of ICT, having had illustrious tenures with high profile institutions.
It is not the fittest of the species that survive, but the most adaptable. So, said naturalist, Charles Darwin.
African Bank is one of the financial institutions that are applying this principle to their businesses as demonstrated through the appointment of Unathi Mtya as group chief information officer, which, effectively qualifies her as part of the group executive committee.
Kennedy Bungane, African Bank CEO, says in Unathi Mtya ,African Bank could not have found a more perfect talent, citing her attributes as a tech enthusiast, a speaker, as well as a member of the Forbes Technology Council. “She (Unathi) will provide the required skill and expertise to translate our ongoing digital strategy into value-add experiences for our customers, and continue to build and expand on our IT capabilities.”
Mtya hastens to say that she is delighting in her new appointment and is looking forward to adding value. “I have always been an advocate of value,” says Mtya. “My remit will include the consideration and implementation of technology platforms that provide value across all digital capabilities of African Bank.”
Mtya’s held a similar position at Grindrod Bank, where she served as chief technology officer. At Grindrod Bank, she was charged with the following tasks: ensuring the efficient handling of the bank’s IT, planning and aligning IT within the business and managing the transition to new technologies. Furthermore, she was ensuring that the institution was abreast of biggest technology trends in the banking space, such as the acceleration of new technologies, the collaboration of banks and fintech firms, and the growing importance of customer experience, says the statement.
Mtya can be described as a veteran in the ICT field, having held senior management, general managment and chief information/technology levels. Most notable is her roles at BCX, the State IT Agency and Parliament.
She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Fort Hare, a professional certificate in CIO practice from Wits University and a Master of Science in technology management from Columbia University in New York, US.
Headquartered in Midrand, African Bank is licensed as a locally-controlled bank by the South African Reserve Bank. It has a countrywide branch distribution network.
