In June 2016, it will be ten years since Luyanda Fenako quit his job as an electrician with a mining company to pursue his goal of self-employment. He used his savings and pension investments to establish a business. And, though it may have seemed imprudent then, it has proved to be the best decision he has ever made.

His company, Fenako Electrical Services has built a good reputation as a reliable provider of a wide range of electrical services for domestic, industrial and commercial projects.

A qualified electrician, Fenako is the sole shareholder of Fenako Electrical Services. Initially, he had roped in partners whom he thought shared his vision, but they left when the going got tough. “They were not patient enough to build the business by persisting through the teething phase which the company was going through,” he reminisces.

Word of mouth, references from satisfied clients, publicity gained through local newspapers and business cards have proved to be the company’s effective marketing tools.  The company’s main clients are the Department of Public Works, The Department of Education and the South African Police Services (SAPS). It also caters for private sector organisations.

Fenako considers the company’s great advantages which competitors envy, amongst others, as the vast skills that its 13 employees possess, the ability to do a thorough quality assurance inspection of the jobs done to eliminate costly errors, and maintaining relationships with clients. “We beat clientele through high quality and customer services,” he states.

Fenako Electrical Services is part of the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA) and ECD and has a licence in electrical installations.

Fenako says that Fenako Electrical Services aims to expand its services. With realising this goal in mind, it will invest in a Crane Truck and a rock drilling machine and, resources permitting, increase its staff complement to 24.
