Wind power and photovoltaic sources have dominated the alternative energy sector. Now, platinum fuel cell power may soon join the energy mix, according to the 100 kilowatt (kW) prototype installed at the at the Chamber of Mines of South Africa (COMSA) offices, which could power about 100 average South African homes.
Mashudu Ramano, Chairperson of Mitochondria Energy, the company behind the R7.5 million installation, sees platinum cell significantly meeting the country’s energy needs.
“This is an emerging industry and it is not yet owned by anyone around the world. There are countries that are leading, but if South Africa can create an environment that is attractive for fuel cell manufacturers, we stand a great chance of owning a significant part of this industry going forward. We have the mineral resources and the energy needs to drive us to achieving that.”
