Striking workers of some organisations might have got the “decent” living wage they did aspire for but this was at a colllosal price in 2013. In other words, they might have got much less than what they had bargained for.

During the launch of the 2013 Industrial Action Report,Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant said the picketing workers might have celebrated for the increases they got, but what they may have overlooked is theR6.7bn they lost in wages due to unprotected strikes.

Stressing that, in reality, there is no real winner in industrial action, Oliphant highlighted the need for government, unions and business to play a more important role in the labour sector. “Stability in the labour force and fair labour practices will attract investors and inspire economic growth in the long run,” she said.
