Abenathi Mtshiyo is proving that talent, determination and cultural pride can transform humble beginnings into extraordinary success. Born and raised in Libode in the Eastern Cape, the contemporary fashion designer and creative director has built a growing reputation in South Africa’s fashion industry through her innovative designs, styling and creative direction. From showcasing jewellery at South African Fashion Week to working as an assistant designer for Sungoddess’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Mtshiyo continues to establish herself as one of the country’s exciting creative talents.
Growing up in rural Libode was far from easy. She recalls a childhood without electricity and limited exposure to opportunities, saying that dreaming beyond her surroundings was difficult. Everything changed after moving to Johannesburg at the age of 11, where a serious illness unexpectedly introduced her to the world of fashion. While recovering from kidney failure, she watched a television programme featuring African designers, inspiring her to start drawing fashion illustrations before teaching herself how to sew. By the age of 12, she had already decided to pursue fashion as her career.
After graduating in 2023, Mtshiyo’s professional journey gained momentum through styling projects for musicians and public figures. She later worked with Imprint South Africa and has since showcased her creativity internationally in Eswatini and Botswana. As the founder of Origin and Creative Director of Tainted South Africa, she now combines fashion design, styling, photography and creative direction to produce visually striking concepts that celebrate African excellence.
Mtshiyo’s work is deeply rooted in African identity. She draws inspiration from her Xhosa heritage, the natural beauty of the Eastern Cape and the legacy of South Africa’s struggle heroines, including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. She believes fashion should tell authentic African stories, and her collections incorporate cultural symbolism, indigenous knowledge and contemporary design to create pieces that are both meaningful and modern.
Despite her growing success, Mtshiyo remains committed to continuous learning and expanding her creative reach. She believes every project presents an opportunity to refine her craft and push creative boundaries. Whether designing garments, styling editorial shoots or directing visual campaigns, her goal is to create work that resonates with audiences while showcasing the richness, diversity and beauty of African culture on both local and international platforms.
Beyond designing clothing, Mtshiyo is passionate about empowering the next generation of creatives. She dreams of establishing fashion schools for underprivileged young people, where students can develop their creative abilities while learning business management and financial literacy. Her vision is to equip aspiring designers with practical skills that will enable them to build sustainable careers and create opportunities for themselves. She hopes these institutions will not only nurture creative talent but also teach young designers how to build successful businesses, manage their finances responsibly and become self-sufficient entrepreneurs.
Her advice to aspiring designers is simple yet powerful: have courage, believe in your talent and never wait for opportunities to come to you. Instead, continuously improve your craft, put your work out into the world and remain committed to your vision.
