The National Lottery Commission (NLC) has appointed Tembinkosi Bonakele as the new Chairperson of its Board, marking a significant leadership transition for one of South Africa’s most important public institutions.
Bonakele, who has already been serving as a member of the NLC board, succeeds Professor Barney Pityana, who resigned from the position in July 2025 before completing his five-year term. Pityana remained in office until a successor was appointed to ensure continuity in the Commission’s governance. The appointment was announced as part of a Cabinet statement issued by the Presidency.
Widely respected for his extensive experience in competition law, public policy and corporate governance, Bonakele brings decades of leadership experience to the role. He previously served for 18 years at the Competition Commission of South Africa, including nine years as Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer. During his tenure, the Commission earned recognition as one of the country’s top-performing public institutions and gained international acclaim for its work in promoting fair competition and economic development.
Bonakele’s appointment follows a rigorous parliamentary selection process. Earlier this year, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition shortlisted three candidates for the position after conducting interviews, security vetting and qualifications verification. Bonakele achieved the highest evaluation score among the shortlisted candidates before the National Assembly adopted the committee’s recommendations for consideration by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
In addition to Bonakele’s appointment as chairperson, Mpho Mosing has been appointed to serve as a member of the National Lottery Commission board, further strengthening the Commission’s governance structure.
The appointment comes at a critical time for the National Lottery Commission as it continues efforts to strengthen governance, improve accountability and restore public confidence following years of heightened scrutiny over the administration and distribution of lottery funding. Parliament has consistently emphasized the importance of ethical leadership, sound governance and transparent decision-making in ensuring the Commission fulfils its mandate of supporting charitable organisations, community development initiatives, arts, culture, sport and other worthy causes across South Africa.
As Chairperson, Bonakele is expected to provide strategic oversight, reinforce good governance practices and help guide the Commission through its next phase of institutional renewal. His proven track record in regulatory leadership, organisational transformation and public sector governance positions him to play a pivotal role in strengthening the Commission’s credibility and advancing its mission of ensuring lottery proceeds continue to benefit communities throughout the country.
