The National Empowerment Fund (NEF) has announced a R1 million investment aimed at supporting transformation and skills development within South Africa’s legal sector. The announcement was made during the Legal Sector Code Media Breakfast, hosted by the Legal Sector Charter Council in partnership with the NEF, bringing together key stakeholders, industry leaders, legal practitioners and members of the media to discuss the progress and future of transformation in the profession.

The event focused on unpacking the significance of the Legal Sector Code and its role in driving meaningful transformation across South Africa’s legal landscape. Discussions highlighted the importance of creating equitable opportunities, improving access to the profession and strengthening participation by historically disadvantaged groups within the legal sector.

The programme featured welcoming remarks by Ms Sanelisiwe “Saney” Mbatha, followed by an address from Dr Susan Mangole. Attendees also received a detailed presentation on the Legal Sector Code by Ms Christine Qunta, while Ms Charity Nzuza provided an update on the work and achievements of the Legal Sector Charter Council. The event concluded with an address by NEF Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mziwabantu Dayimani, who outlined the organisation’s ongoing commitment to supporting transformation initiatives across various sectors of the economy.

A key highlight of the event was the announcement of a dedicated R1 million fund aimed at supporting the placement of law graduates in law firms to complete their articles. This initiative seeks to address barriers to entry faced by many aspiring legal professionals by creating opportunities for graduates to gain the practical experience required to qualify and build successful careers in law.

The event also introduced candidate attorneys currently undertaking their articles through supported programmes, demonstrating the positive impact that targeted investment and partnerships can have on developing the next generation of legal practitioners. Stakeholders noted that such initiatives are critical in expanding access to the profession and strengthening the pipeline of future Black legal practitioners.

Speakers emphasised that transformation in the legal sector remains both a constitutional and economic imperative. The Legal Sector Code continues to play an important role in advancing equality and ensuring that opportunities within the profession are more inclusive and representative of South Africa’s demographics.

Through partnerships such as this, the NEF continues to support initiatives that promote economic inclusion, skills development, enterprise growth and transformation, reinforcing its commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive economy for all South Africans.
