For Elvis Mugondo, the founder of Fhulufhelo Tours, success has been built on perseverance, vision and a deep passion for people. His journey began in the rural village of Ha-Davhana in Limpopo, where dusty roads and limited opportunities formed part of everyday life. Despite these challenges, Mugondo developed a strong work ethic and determination that would later shape his entrepreneurial journey.
Raised under the guidance of his uncle, who had little formal education, Mugondo learned valuable lessons about resilience and hard work. In 1978, he left home in search of better opportunities and began working at a gold mine before spending more than a decade in the security industry. His commitment to personal growth led him to continue his education through Funda Community College in Soweto, where he eventually became a manager responsible for the institution’s security operations.
Although he never attended university, Mugondo believes that practical experience and continuous learning have been the foundation of his success. His entrepreneurial ambitions started taking shape while working in various industries, where he closely observed successful business models and searched for opportunities to create something of his own.
His breakthrough came when he completed training as a tourist guide. The experience introduced him to the tourism industry and sparked a passion for connecting with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Inspired by his love for travel and human interaction, he established Fhulufhelo Tours in 2000. The word “Fhulufhelo” means “hope”, a name that reflects both his personal journey and the company’s vision.
Over the past 26 years, Fhulufhelo Tours has grown into a respected tourism enterprise operating in Gauteng and Mpumalanga. One of Mugondo’s greatest achievements has been building long-term relationships with international clients through exceptional service and word-of-mouth referrals. The company has serviced eight universities from the United States and one from Germany, with some partnerships dating back to 2003. Among the institutions that have worked with Fhulufhelo Tours are Harvard University, Arizona State University, the University of Maryland, the University of San Diego, Butler University and Northwestern University.
The company has also earned international recognition through its work with global media organisations, including NBC News from the United States and NHK Television from Japan. These relationships have helped position Fhulufhelo Tours as a trusted gateway for international visitors seeking authentic South African experiences.Mugondo further expanded the company’s global footprint by travelling to Germany, Turkey and the United Kingdom to market his business and establish relationships with international tour operators and travel agencies. Today, Fhulufhelo Tours continues to attract overseas visitors while showcasing South Africa’s rich culture, history and natural beauty to the world.
Despite its achievements, Mugondo says the tourism sector continues to face challenges, particularly for small businesses that struggle to access resources and expand their capacity. Nevertheless, he remains committed to growing the business, creating employment opportunities and inspiring future entrepreneurs. Today, Mugondo is focused on expanding Fhulufhelo Tours and Summit Lodge in Graskop, Mpumalanga. More than two decades after launching the business, he continues to demonstrate that determination, resilience and hope can transform humble beginnings into a globally recognised success story.
