A BOOK IN MEMORY OF KIMI MAKWETU

WITS Business School

Leadership is often defined by the ability to navigate change, inspire others and make difficult decisions in challenging circumstances. These themes are explored in Change Agents: Leadership Lessons from 23 of South Africa’s Senior Leaders, a newly released book that brings together the experiences and perspectives of some of the country’s most respected leaders.

The publication is based on the WBS Leadership Dialogues, a series of conversations facilitated by Professor Mills Soko at the Wits Business School between 2020 and 2024. Through these discussions, readers gain rare insight into the leadership journeys of individuals who have played significant roles in shaping South Africa’s business, academic and public sectors.

Rather than focusing on theory, the book captures personal reflections, practical experiences and leadership lessons from 23 influential figures. The conversations provide an honest look at the challenges leaders face, the values that guide their decisions and the responsibilities that come with positions of influence.

Among those featured are South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago, MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita, Nando’s co-founder Robert Brozin, Anglo American South Africa Chair Nolitha Fakude and Wits Chancellor Dr Judy Nobuhle Dlamini. Their stories offer valuable perspectives on leadership, resilience, innovation and the importance of creating lasting impact.

The diversity of voices included in the book is one of its defining strengths. By bringing together leaders from different sectors and backgrounds, Change Agents highlights the many paths to leadership while revealing common principles that contribute to success. The discussions also shed light on how leaders respond to uncertainty, drive organisational growth and contribute to national development.

The publication arrives at a time when organisations across the country are increasingly focused on cultivating ethical, adaptable and forward-thinking leadership. The experiences shared by the contributors provide practical examples of how leaders have navigated economic pressures, social change and evolving business environments while remaining committed to their goals and responsibilities.

The book is dedicated to the memory of the late Kimi Makwetu, South Africa’s former Auditor-General. His 2020 dialogue marked the beginning of the WBS Leadership Dialogues series. Widely respected for his commitment to accountability, transparency and ethical governance, Makwetu’s contribution remains an important part of the publication’s legacy.

At a time when strong and ethical leadership is increasingly important, Change Agents offers readers an opportunity to learn from individuals who have helped shape South Africa’s future. The book serves as both a record of leadership experiences and a source of inspiration for emerging leaders seeking to make a meaningful difference in their communities, organisations and the country as a whole.

The official book launch will take place at Exclusive Books in Rosebank at 18h00 on Wednesday, 3 June.
