Luthando Madhlopa

For Luthando Madhlopa, empowerment begins with dignity, confidence and access to opportunity. As the new Chairperson of A Million Girls Foundation, she is helping shape a future where young girls across Africa are equipped not only to stay in school but also to believe in their worth and leadership potential.Madhlopa joined the foundation because of its mission to centre “something deeply powerful” a Black girl learning to understand, honour and love herself.

Through initiatives focused on period dignity education, wellness, sport and self-awareness, the organisation is tackling some of the barriers that continue to prevent young girls from fully participating in education and society. One of the foundation’s key initiatives includes the distribution of menstrual cups and access to period dignity education, helping young girls remain in school with confidence and dignity. Beyond addressing practical needs, the organisation also focuses on building self-esteem, body awareness and leadership skills through wellness and sporting programmes.

According to Madhlopa, the impact of these initiatives extends far beyond the classroom. She has witnessed young girls transform into confident young women who go on to secure sports scholarships, educational opportunities and leadership positions. These success stories, she says, are proof that investing in girls creates lasting social change. “At A Million Girls Foundation, we are not only helping girls stay in school, we are helping them recognise their value and potential,” she explains. “When a girl is empowered, entire communities benefit.”

As the new Chairperson, Madhlopa says she is committed to expanding the foundation’s impact to reach millions more girls across the continent. She believes access to dignity education and empowerment programmes can play a critical role in changing the trajectory of young women’s lives, particularly in underserved communities.

The organisation’s vision is reflected in its name ensuring that a million girls across Africa are given the support, confidence and opportunities needed to succeed. Through education, mentorship, wellness programmes and advocacy, the foundation continues to create spaces where girls are encouraged to dream bigger and pursue leadership with confidence. For Luthando Madhlopa, true empowerment is not simply about providing resources; it is about restoring dignity, building confidence and reminding every young girl that her future matters.
