Behind the success of Sikunyana Attorneys is a story rooted in resilience, authenticity and a passion for solving problems. Founded in 2016 by attorney and entrepreneur Yolelwa Sikunyana, the firm was established with a vision to bridge the gap between legal services and small businesses that often struggle to access affordable legal support.
Born and raised in the Eastern Cape in a town called Sterkspruit, Sikunyana built her career by gaining experience in both the public and private sectors before opening her own practice. She explained that the firm initially focused on helping small businesses understand legal compliance, contracts and corporate governance.
“We saw ourselves as problem solvers,” she said. “Many small businesses cannot afford to retain attorneys, so we wanted to educate and assist them where we could.”
Today, Sikunyana Attorneys operates in several areas including commercial law, litigation, corporate law, public administrative law and local government matters. However, the journey has not been without challenges.
Sikunyana highlighted that penetrating the legal market as a black female-owned firm required persistence and courage. She said earning the trust of clients and proving the firm’s capabilities was one of the biggest obstacles in the early years. Sikunyana Inc. Attorneys aim to become the legal advisor of choice across the continent through excellence and practical legal solutions.
“You must show up as an excellent and competent lawyer first,” she explained. “Transformation policies are important but excellence and reliability are what sustain a business.”
Beyond legal work, Sikunyana is passionate about mentorship and empowering young graduates. Through her “Lean On Me Movement,” she connects aspiring legal professionals with opportunities, mentors, and networks within the legal industry. The initiative, which began as a WhatsApp group, has now evolved into a larger mentoring platform that hosts annual engagement sessions for graduates.
At her firm, she currently mentors three candidate attorneys, as part of her commitment to developing young legal professionals . Yolelwa also authored the book The Legal Guide To Small Businesses and hosts MasterClasses for ‘Kasi’ entrepreneurs to navigate complex legal challenges, commercial contracts, and governance.
Sikunyana believes entrepreneurship requires resilience and authenticity above all else. She described herself not only as a lawyer but as a “problem solver” and “fixer” who enjoys creating solutions for both businesses and individuals.
“Life is going to knock you down,” she said. “But what matters is how you respond to it. Be authentic, persevere and never forget why you started.”
Through Sikunyana Attorneys, Yolelwa Sikunyana continues to inspire young professionals to pursue independence, excellence and meaningful impact in South Africa’s legal and business landscape.
