When I think of empowerment, I picture dreams turning into action plans and connections sparking transformation. That’s exactly what I witnessed throughout 2024—a year packed with impactful initiatives aimed at uplifting women, men, youth, and entrepreneurs.
From the vibrant energy of youth summits to the powerful voices of women in leadership, South Africans across all walks of life have been stepping up, connecting, and growing together. This isn’t just about isolated successes—it’s about a movement building momentum for a brighter, more inclusive future.
BRIDGING DREAMS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH
2024 saw incredible strides in creating opportunities for young people. Summits across provinces like the North West, Free State, and Western Cape connected youth with career pathways, training, and insights into industries like transport, manufacturing, and agriculture.
“Empowerment is about meeting young people where they are and giving them the tools to create their own futures,” shared Sibongile Gangxa, Managing Executive of Special Projects. “We want them to leave with hope and practical steps for success.”
I saw young people not just participating but leading conversations, seizing tools, and shaping their futures. It’s proof that when we bring opportunities to where they’re needed most, lives change.
CELEBRATING WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP
August’s leadership summit wasn’t just an event; it was a celebration of women’s excellence across industries. With 16 stages and 2,000 attendees, the energy was electric.
“Empowering women goes beyond recognition—it’s about creating spaces where they can thrive, grow, and mentor others,” said Gangxa.
The launch of a mentorship programme during the summit was a game-changer. Young women now have access to the guidance and networks they need to thrive, ensuring that leadership remains strong across generations.
REDEFINING MASCULINITY WITH OPEN CONVERSATIONS
Men’s summits in 2024 were game-changers, particularly during International Men’s Day in November. These events created a safe space for honest discussions around mental health, fatherhood, and modern masculinity.
“The conversation around masculinity is evolving, and we must create platforms for men to explore healthier and more balanced perspectives,” explained Gangxa. “Breaking the cycle of toxic masculinity begins with open dialogue.”
Over 2,000 men participated in these summits, tackling complex topics with courage and authenticity. It was inspiring to witness these bold steps toward redefining masculinity.
FUNDING THE FUTURE FOR ENTREPRENEURS
Supporting small businesses has never been more critical, and entrepreneurs had the opportunity to pitch their dreams to investors during 2024’s funding summit.
“The funding summit wasn’t just about investments,” said Gangxa. “It was about giving entrepreneurs the knowledge, tools, and networks to drive sustainable growth.”
Seeing ideas come to life with the backing of resources and mentorship was unforgettable. It’s this kind of support that strengthens our economy and ensures businesses have a chance to thrive.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025
As we gear up for the year ahead, there’s so much to look forward to. New mentorship initiatives for women and boys will bridge generational gaps and create healthier pathways to leadership and growth.
“2025 is all about creating a holistic approach to empowerment,” Gangxa noted. “From young boys learning positive expressions of masculinity to women stepping into leadership roles, we’re building a future where everyone can thrive.”
The future is bright because it’s being built by those who believe in the power of mentorship, collaboration, and sustainable development. This is more than a movement—it’s the foundation of a thriving South Africa.
