South Africa is in the midst of a serious water crisis, and I believe investment in our water infrastructure is essential if we are to secure a prosperous future. This isn’t just about ensuring access to clean water; it’s about unlocking potential, creating jobs, and uplifting communities across the country.
At a recent business dinner in Mkhambathini, KwaZulu-Natal, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, shared his vision on this front, emphasising how smart investments in water and sanitation infrastructure can make all the difference. “Reliable access to water is essential for attracting businesses and ensuring that they can operate efficiently,” he explained. “This, in turn, drives job creation and economic activity, which benefits the entire community.”
These words couldn’t be more relevant. Water is fundamental not only to public health but also to economic sustainability and growth. Reliable water services are a foundation upon which industries, communities, and individuals can thrive.
One major initiative underway is the uMkhomazi Water Project. This ambitious project includes the construction of a dam and an extensive pipeline network, set to boost the region’s water supply by 55%. Though financial constraints initially stalled the project, Mahlobo reassured us that challenges have been addressed. “The affordability challenges surrounding this project have been resolved through a blended finance solution approved by National Treasury,” he announced. “This financing arrangement ensures that the project can move forward, and it is expected to be completed by 2030/32.”
We are standing at a pivotal moment. South Africa’s water crisis may seem overwhelming, but with strategic investments and innovative solutions, we’re building a future that benefits every South African. Let’s continue to champion infrastructure projects that lay the foundation for growth, resilience, and opportunity for all.
