ABASA CALLS FOR SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa

(ABASA) calls for inclusive social accountability and ethical leadership amid South Africa’s greylisting debate and ahead of its national convention.

The auditing sector has been a subject of widespread scrutiny in the last few years. As an organisation committed to ethical values, discipline, integrity, and respect, ABASA amongst many other topics will discuss the role of accounting professionals in the advancement of transformation, ethics and standards at its upcoming national annual convention.

ABASA’s convention will see a gathering of like-minded individuals, leaders, and professionals in the financial and accounting sectors. The transformation advocacy organization aims to draw attention to excellence in leadership in the accounting profession and accountability even during tough economic times.

ABASA’s current national President Linda Maqoma, whose tenure started just under a year ago is leading the conversation on the importance of maintaining servant leadership with concern for social ills, consciousness, equity, an inclusive economy for the greater good, and greater impact.

“The responsibility that comes with the social mandate of this organization is to stand up for what others may not have the courage to stand up for and to remain conscious of who we are and the role we play in South Africa. “We” means all of us as an aligned and focused collective because it is only in unity and collaboration that we drive meaningful impact for the greater good of our country, says Maqoma.

The much-anticipated annual convention will be held in Cape Town from the 27th – 29th of October

2022 under the theme “Driving Leadership Excellence”. Amongst expected guest is Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago, Auditor General Tsakane Maluleke, and CEO of South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Freeman Nomvalo.

This is the organizations flagship event which will celebrate 37 years of ABASAs existence as a transformation leader in the accounting and auditing sector.

“We are grateful to all our sponsors who responded positively when asked to partner with us especially our headline sponsors SAPRO, the Auditor General of South Africa and Old Mutual. This goes a long way in ensuring an enabling environment for industry engagement and to capacitate the important work of ABASA beyond this event”,says Maqoma.
