New-generation enterprise technologies have the potential to improve financial and operational management within Public Sector entities. These solutions can help enhance service delivery to citizens. This is according to Wipro Limited, an IT consulting and outsourcing company. Wipro’s Business Development Manager – Government and Public Services – South Africa, John Mokiti, mentioned some of the most important applications of technology in government. “Building responsive systems, digitizing processes, developing skills, conducting advanced analytics and entrepreneur development, would he address some of the challenges experienced in the Public Sector” he said.
According to Mokiti, the first step on the journey to e-Government services is to replace all of the legacy infrastructure unable to keep pace with new technology and demands. “Our government is under huge strain in some areas, and while technology cannot be a fix-all solution, it can assist in speeding up processes for many government services,” he said. Mokiti believes the shortage in the public sector can be addressed with the right technology which will ultimately improve efficiency and stimulate economic growth. “By moving towards Cloud-based architecture, government is able to reduce the need for certain specialist skills while new online and mobile learning tools can help government employees with an array of learning materials” he said. Partnerships with educational institutions can further improve public servants’ access to skills development.
Mokiti believes Government’s provision, maintenance and enhancement of infrastructure and services is compounded by the relatively small pool of taxpayers which require advanced analytics to create much-needed efficiencies. He also explained how enterprise development can be fostered by selecting the right partners. “By selecting partners who have a strong focus on enterprise development, Government’s ICT investments can be leveraged to have a broader impact on economic growth”, said Mokiti.
