Seventeen years ago, while working a bricklayer for a construction firm, after intense contemplation, Isaac Mabena felt that he deserved better than labouring for long hours and being remunerated “peanuts” for all his dedication. His life was at a blind alley, stagnant, and he was not getting any younger. The next step would define his next destination in life. “I had a gut feeling that I had to make a bold move and work towards becoming self-employed. It was a matter of now or never,” Mabena relates.
Short of capital, but armed with an unshakable conviction, Mabena established Gugamsila Training and Projects (GTP), a company which offers construction, plastering, plumbing, painting, roofing and electrical services. Years of scrupulously building the business’ foundation have reaped just rewards and GTP is now a stable entity, notwithstanding the challenges, inevitable for any growing firm, that often surface.
His training in plumbing and experience in construction has been instrumental in ensuring that the businesses’ resources are managed prudently. Besides, accredited by the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), GTP has benefitted from having all the registration requirements in order. This gives it credibility in an overtraded industry in which shady contractors who can’t deliver have made clients to be very circumspect. “We firmly believe that in the construction industry, you are your reputation determines how successful you will be,” states Mabena.
Considering the state of depression currently experienced in the construction industry, Mabena believes Gugamsila is “not doing badly, but he could do much better with more clients to service”. “We only have clients in and around Pretoria, but would like to reach other areas as well,” he says.
As a black business owner, Mabena feels obliged to participate in developing skills of Historically Disadvantaged Individuals. GTP trained two of the company’s eight permanent workers from into consummate professionals, which he says is a “great source of pride”.
GTP is mapping the next growth phase, which, Mabena reveals, resources permitting, will involve growing the client base and real estate development. “With our vision, dedication and focus, I have the conviction we will meet our objectives.”
