An early bird catches the worm, says the old saying. The same could be said about the formation of the South African Young Diamond Beneficiators’ Guild, at the Diamond Indaba in Johannesburg, which will ensure that Black South African start-ups grow simultaneously with the country’s nascent diamond beneficiation industry.
Aimed at boosting the processing and manufacturing of rough diamonds, the association will assist start-ups (manufacturers and middlemen) who buy rough stones, cut and polish and resell to retailers, according to the Department of Mineral Resources.
Currently, black entrepreneurs struggle with a stronger dollar and liquidity, in most cases reluctantly turning to bank loans to cover purchases until their can sell their finished goods. There is a concern amongst black business bodies that this might frustrate them from participating in the industry.
Launched at the first South African Diamond Indaba, the South African Young Diamond Beneficiators’ Guild aims to help start ups led by mainly black entrepreneurs to cut and polish diamonds.
