There is no winner and it will certainly be the same i in future in the persistent business-labour conflict in the mining sector. The outspoken Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American, Mark Cutifani, sounded this warning during a lecture he presented at the Gordon Institute of Business Science on 30 July 2015. Transform SA Online was represented.

In his typical direct frankness, Cutifani remarked: “A lack of trust and a long history of adversarial labour relations between labour, business and government are impediments to a more efficient mining industry.”

The common sentiment is that, given that current state of the mining sector, in which conditions are not ideal for investors, the conflict between labour and government, on the one hand, and business on the other is only worsening the business environment. According to Cutifani, the best way to address this is for all constituents to change the conversation and start working together for the industry’s good.
