The maverick founder of British conglomerate Virgin Group, Richard Branson, is advocating for a system that allows office-bound workers to work from home. He said this in an interview with Facebook last month.
Branson said that he believed that the system would encourage women to succeed at work as ensure that they attend to parental matters while working on their careers.
“If [people with children] can get the job done at home and they can be around their kids, then I think that’s good for the family and good for the business and good for the individual,” he explained.
With long hours it takes for one to commute from home to the workplace in South Africa, this may appear to be a very attractive option for majority of working class South Africa. The only setback would be that it has not worked perfectly in developed countries where the concept was introduced.
Yahoo, which first introduced the idea with the objective of encouraging its workers to be more creative as rival Google has done to good effect, canned it after discovering that it was having a negative impact.
Then should South African companies introduced the work-at-home culture for working mothers?
