Court case highlights the coloured Employment Equity dilemma

There are times when aggrieved coloured and Indian South Africans have felt that they are marginalised on the account of national and regional demographics in the application of Employment Equity (EE) politicies. The recent case involving a coloured member of trade union federation Solidarity and the Department of Correctional Services held in the labour Appeal Court in Cape Town for the umpteenth time highlighted the issue. The Correctional Services employee argued that he had been overlooked for vacancy available in the Department on the account of race even though he qualified under EE policies.

In court, the Department of Correctional Services said that it did not consider coloured candidates for vacancies as the coloured demographic quota had been reached. This offended the coloured community as they felt that the discrimination they suffered during apartheid was being deliberately ignored.

Some coloured interest bodies have felt that coloured people are down in the pecking order of black economic empowerment previleges, with some lamenting that their lot has not improved even in the new all-inclusive multiracial political dispensation.
