It was hugely expected that, after the six month long AMCU-led strike, sanity would prevail in the mining sector. However, recent developments are not encouraging, as the recent strike involving Northam Platinum Mine indicates. It is clear that the employers and unions are still not seeing each other eye to eye.
As this article was being posted online, 5 200 workers at Northam’s Zondereinde mine in northern Limpopo province were still on strike. According to NUM spokesperson, Livhuwani Mammburu the workers are demanding for the removal of the company’s chief executive Paul Dunne removed for what they say are unfair hiring and firing practices.
