The Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) is challenging young people with feasible business ideas to approach it for funding.
According to Sefa CEO, Thakhani Makhuvh, the organisation has only disbursed about R300 million of R1.7 billion which was set aside to fund businesses by young people two years ago, which means R1.4 billion is yet to be spent.
Makhuvha lamented that the main challenge which prevented young people from qualifying for assistance was lack of a business plan.
“There are some entrepreneurs with brilliant ideas but they just can’t put pen to paper and we find it hard to back them,” he said.
Sefa was formed out of the 2012 merger of Khula Enterprise Agency and Samaf (South African Micro-finance Apex Fund). The fund is targeted at young people between the ages of 18 and 35. It grants loans from R500 to R5 million to young people, either to start a business or grow an existing one.
