Phuthuma Nhleko: the deal maker of note

Not everybody who leaves the high paying corporate world into Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) makes it. In fact, they are stories of success and failure in equal measure.

Amongst those making it is former CEO of MTN, Phuthuma Nhleko. And, the proposed merger between cement rivals, AfriSam and PPC, which his company, Pembani, is overseeing, could turn out to be one of the most ground-breaking deals in recent years yet. If the deal goes through, it will add to the portfolio of big deals he has overseen yet.

Nhleko is not new in mega BEE deals.

As former CEO of MTN, Nhleko was involved in clinching several deals, which were later to become the springboard for the telecoms giant’s expansion across Africa.

As PPC, is eyeing expansion into Africa, his nous will be handy. When Nhleko served as CEO between 2002 and 2011, telecommunications company MTN expanded in 21 African countries.
