Mayor of Johannesburg conferred as one of the Chief Mourner at Nelson Mandela’s Funeral
The City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor Councilor Mpho Franklyn (Parks) Tau, has received the honour of being chosen as one of the three Chief Mourners at former President Nelson Mandela’s memorial and funeral service.
Clr Tau will stand alongside the other two Chief Mourners, namely, a Mandela Family member and the President of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma, at the memorial service in Johannesburg and at the state funeral in Qunu.
In South Africa, it is customary for the Chief Mourners to be seated within the inner circle of mourners, and to offer support to the grieving family.
The status of Chief Mourner is a privilege and an honour to Clr Tau, who also served as a member of the ANC Orlando West branch with Mandela while he was President of South Africa. This is a tribute to former president Nelson Mandela, at the request of the Presidency and the Mandela Family.
