ACT NOW: BUSINESS CAN LEAD SUSTAINABILITY

As I reflect on the call to action from Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts, I can’t help but feel inspired by the role we, as business leaders, must play in creating a sustainable future. The message is clear: it’s no longer enough to simply focus on profits. We have to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into the very fabric of our organisations.

Speaking at the recent ESG Africa Conference, Swarts urged us to take responsibility: “We encourage business leaders to play a significant role in ensuring their organisations better integrate ESG principles into their value system and overall organisational strategy.” This isn’t just a box-ticking exercise—it’s about seizing the investment opportunities that lie ahead for South Africa.

South Africa, rich in natural resources and with a diverse economy, is uniquely positioned to lead the charge in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and sustainable industrialisation. Swarts reminded us that “a just transition to a low-carbon economy will make South Africa’s economy more resilient and strengthen the country’s global competitiveness.” By embracing this shift, we can create opportunities to reduce poverty, inequality, and unemployment.

This really resonated with me. Sustainability isn’t just for large corporations—every business, big or small, can make a difference. Swarts emphasised the importance of recognising that “an organisation doesn’t operate in a vacuum but is an integral part of society and therefore has accountability towards current and future generations.” Our actions today will impact those who come after us.

What excites me most is the vision South Africa is setting for itself. “With its substantial stocks of critical minerals, plentiful solar and wind energy, South Africa is setting itself up to be a leader in green hydrogen, renewable energy, and sustainable industrialisation,” Swarts said. The potential for growth in these areas is enormous, and by adopting sustainable practices, we can ensure our businesses thrive alongside these advancements.

At the heart of this message is accountability and opportunity. By reducing our carbon footprint and conserving resources, we not only safeguard the environment but also build healthier, more resilient communities. “Businesses must understand that it’s no longer sufficient to focus solely on financial performance; investors and stakeholders now demand that companies adopt sustainable practices that consider the long-term impact of their operations,” Swarts reminded us.

I feel empowered by her words and the collective responsibility we share. It’s up to us to lead by example, ensuring that our business practices today set the stage for a better, more sustainable tomorrow. South Africa is on the brink of becoming a global leader in sustainable practices—let’s step up, commit, and be part of that transformation. Together, we can build a resilient, low-carbon economy that benefits both our businesses and our people.

The time to act is now. Let’s lead the way.
