The Chamber of Mines South Africa wishes to express its sincere condolences to the families of the eight mineworkers who passed away in the tragic accident at Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited’s Doornkop Mine yesterday.
The sector remains committed to working with all stakeholders in ensuring that safety remains a priority at all times. The accident is an unfortunate event considering the good safety performance of the mine over the years.
The Chamber commends the work of the rescue team over the past day, which saw the successful rescue of 8 miners and we wish them further success for the search and rescue of the remaining miner.
“We are very encouraged by the expediency in which Harmony has handled this very unfortunate incident, as the Chamber we will continue providing the necessary support through our various safety committees as we work tirelessly towards the zero harm goal”, said Mike Teke, President of the Chamber.
