Skills shortage preventing black ownership in retail sector – retail tycoon

The retail sector remains the least transformed of the country’s economic sectors. This is in spite of the black South Africans constituting the majority of the retailers’ customer base.

Some have argued that this apparent lack of transformation in ownership has been attributed to less commercial pressure placed on retailers.

However, retail tycoon, Christo Wiese, is not entirely surprised by this situation as the sector has a small pool of talent able to run big organisations.

“Forget about race or any race classification – just finding people is a very difficult task and you have to train people over a long period of time to do that kind of job,” he says, in an interview published by the Business Section of Sunday Times.
